Appointed US Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana in 2021, Zach spent fourteen years at the Department of Justice (DOJ) before joining McCarter. His public service includes more than a decade as an Assistant US Attorney both in the District of Maryland and the Southern District of Indiana where he led investigations, prosecutions, and appeals of a wide range of federal offenses, with a focus on cyber and technology-facilitated crimes.

An experienced trial lawyer and investigator, Zach advises clients across industries on a wide range of complex civil and criminal disputes. He also conducts internal investigations and helps clients navigate investigations brought by government regulators and state and federal prosecutors. Zach has extensive cybersecurity experience and is the co-leader of McCarter’s Cybersecurity & Data Privacy group. He works with clients to identify risks, implement and evaluate security programs, and respond to cyber incidents, including data breaches and ransomware attacks.

As US Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, Zach crafted and implemented the office’s strategic plan, which focused on addressing gun violence, disrupting drug trafficking, protecting and promoting civil rights, and prosecution of complex crimes including, cybercrime, economic crimes, public corruption, human trafficking, and child exploitation. During his tenure as US Attorney, he served as chair of the Attorney General’s Advisory Subcommittee on Cyber and Intellectual Property and as a member of various committees and working groups developing policy and addressing issues relating to cybercrime and technology. Zach was instrumental in developing the DOJ’s comprehensive cyber strategy and policies related to artificial intelligence. He worked closely with the DOJ’s National Security Division, Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section, and Fraud Section, as well as the DOJ’s Office of International Affairs and the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation to obtain evidence overseas, extradite defendants for prosecution in the United States, and facilitate European prosecutions.

As an Assistant US Attorney for the District of Maryland, Zach helped to create the office’s National Security & Cybercrime Section and served as the office’s first Cybercrime Counsel, a role in which he worked closely with law enforcement agencies and the US intelligence community to investigate transnational cybercrimes and handle national security matters including espionage, digital currency crimes, and computer hacking.
